Project Reflections: Contributions, Likes/Dislikes
1. The video project this semester was a huge collaborative effort between myself and my teammates. We split up roles and designated tasks for each of us to do individually to make up our share of the work. Primarily I was responsible for the interview questions and the overall flow of the project. During the interview process I served as the scribe, and recorded down the main ideas and points from Ma Mary's stories and made an interview log. From there I brainstormed and marked down changes that should be made to the clips. Having generated the interview questions and been the scribe it was easy for me to see the overall scope of the story should be. In class we discussed the major revisions for the video as a group. Finally we all came together to create supporting documentation such as the group contract and other details.
2/3. My favorite thing about the video are the shots we have of Ma Mary speaking. Her face shows so much expression, even though her words are not always clear. I also really like the way the theme of the video is expressed through the scenes we decided to choose. I think it clearly depicts Ma Mary's experiences with violence and hunger in her flee for refuge. The most displeasing thing about the video to me is the background. If I had the chance to shoot over I would pick different spot for Ma Mary to sit. The background is very reflective and distracting with people moving in the background. Additionally I would have Henri and Ma Mary sitting in chairs without a table in front of them, so we could see their body language. There was one clip that shows Ma Mary explaining being stabbed and she is showing it on her leg, and we couldn't see it. This would have been a good clip to include, had the seating arrangement been different. Overall, I am very satisfied with the way the project turned out.
M1)The writer can convey purpose through her opening statement. She understands what she is writing for and to who. This is shown by her attention to including context in the video. The writer understands the subject matter and uses textual support from previous working this class to explain why she did things. For example, she referred to meeting with Chanda and what that taught her about interviewing. Additionally, the writer uses multimodal form to emphasis and show general understanding and meta cognitive writing. The writer pays a lot of focus on interpreting and evaluating the content of the video during the process of making the video. Making these points clearer would be helpful
M2)The writer supports the argument that she has met the course outcomes by creating the piece through a multimodal form of communication. There is some reference to what we learned and covered in class. Using more of this will strengthen the piece. The core understanding of multimodal texts and the writing process are clearly shown in this project.
M4) The text guides the reader through the process of making the project. Each section fits together and it is broken down in the order of events to help with coherence. The project is very well organized. It is important to consider what you will be using as the background images for the slides when you add the recordings.
S2) The writer supports her understanding of subject matter knowledge by telling us she researched ( it is not really shown). The writer shows understanding of discourse communities and genres when talking about editing and picking the style of the video. Additionally, the writer talks about her writing process. She does not really support her arguments in any other way besides writing them out. Show us more relevant pieces, for example a clip of audio or a different frame of the video where you are employing something we learned. Currently the discussion of your piece is grounded in the actual project rather than through the course outcomes. It would be helpful to use course readings here.
S3) The multimodal aspects of the text are meaningful to the piece. One image shows Ma Esther their community partner and the other the start of the film. Adding the sound feature will definitely enhance the piece. I think it would be helpful to use different screen captures to show how you did something in the video (such as subtitles to appeal to audience or a photo embedded). Overall including more images and creating a moving flow of the multimodal aspects would strengthen the piece.
S4) The text is very coherent and put together in a logical way. The text guides me to understand the experience the writer had when doing this project. The piece is not put together in a creative way, which I feel takes away from the great content and understanding the writer has. The text guides us through the sequential activities of the project and allows the reader to make sense of the project as a whole, as well as the writer’s role.
Project Reflections to Peers
I really enjoyed the oppertunity to review other peoples work. It allowed me to see the other ways people were approaching the project. My favorite idea that I saw in action was the use of the slideshow. I had started my slideshow but had not really been able to figure out how to incpoporate all the sections. I now see how they can be broken down and plan to continue using them as part of my project. I admired one writers explanation and integration of information she gathered through course material to create the piece she did.
For my project I will write down the event that happened and why I did what I did on slides. Next I will record myself talking about how an example from the course applies or helped me to decide on the choice to make. I will have one slide with text and the following slide will have a creative image and a voice recording explaining the evidence from class. I am considering adding the reason I show and understand course outcomes.
